Interlibrary Loan and Generalist Librarian

Position: Staff


MSOE will have a temporary full-time position available from approximately mid-January 2010 through mid-March 2010.  The ideal candidate will have experience in an academic library. 

Specific duties include:
[1]        Ensure that all customer requests for Interlibrary Loan items are satisfactorily addressed, or that such requests are properly referred.

This function includes, but may not be limited to, the following duties:
Be responsible for helping all students, faculty, and staff with all Interlibrary Loan requests in a timely manner (i.e., all requests should be acted upon within 24 hours).

  • Use the Interlibrary Loan software, Clio, the OCLC Interlibrary Loan system, and the library's integrated automated system, Horizon, to initiate, receive, track, and complete borrowing and lending of Interlibrary Loan items.
  • Use the Interlibrary Loan software, Clio, to maintain and generate monthly Interlibrary Loan statistics for the Director of the Library.
  • Maintain full paper records of all Interlibrary Loan transactions.
  • Ensure that the Interlibrary Loan function is carried out in a manner compliant with United States Copyright Law.
  • Understand and implement when necessary paper-based methods for initiating, receiving, and completing Interlibrary Loan transactions.
  • Understand and implement when necessary methods for accelerating the completion of Interlibrary Loan requests by students who are working under deadlines.
  • Notify Interlibrary Loan patrons and institutions of overdue items and effect resolution.
  • Become familiar and comply with the policies and procedures of the South Central Library System Delivery Network.

[2]        Maintain the MSOE Biomolecular Models Lending Library.  The Lending Library provides short-term loans of unique biomolecular models produced by MSOE's Center for Biomolecular Modeling.  Schools, colleges, universities, and researchers from around the world borrow the models. 

This function includes, but may not be limited to, the following duties:

  • Use e-mail and telephone to receive requests to borrow biomolecular models from the library's biomolecular models lending library. Respond to requests in a prompt manner.
  • Use the Interlibrary Loan software, Clio, and the library's integrated automated system, Horizon, to initiate, record, track, and complete lending of the biomolecular models.
  • Use the Interlibrary Loan software, Clio, to maintain and generate monthly lending statistics of the models, and provide the statistics to the Director of the Library and the Center for Biomolecular Modeling. Statistics minimally should include model designations, geographic destinations, number of uses, and request denials.
  • Use the library's current scheduling system to maintain reservations for the models.
  • Pack and secure cases containing models, and employ FedEx to send models to borrowers. Maintain proper paperwork, as well as check-in procedures when models are returned.
  • Consult with the MSOE Mailroom in order to maintain for budgetary and accounting purposes accurate shipping costs associated with the Lending Library.

Hours for this position:
Tuesday - 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Wednesday -- 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Thursday -- 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Friday - 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Saturday - 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
