Grohmann Museum Grand Opening

What is an engineering university doing with its own art collection? Plenty.

The Grohmann Museum is the new home of the 700+ piece Man at Work Collection. The museum itself is a work of art, with architectural elements derived from the collection.

Come see the museum for yourself on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 1-4 p.m.as the museum has its Grand Opening. View the collection in its permanent home amidst the splendor of the design elements inspired by the collection.

The Grohmann Museum is also home to MSOE's General Studies Department, which incorporates the Man at Work Collection into the curriculum.

For instance, Dr. Katherine Wikoff , associate professor in the General Studies Department, tours the Man at Work Collection with her humanities course "Humanities Selected Topics: Images of Man at Work."

"Work is the unifying theme of this," Dr. Wikoff said. "Using the imagery of work in film, literature, music and the Man at Work Collection, we interpret the meaning of work in America and how the paradigm shifts over time." The course includes a guest lecture and tour by John Kopmeier, director of the art collection. She added that students benefit from seeing the collection in person and later use the Man at Work Collection book during review and exams.

The Man at Work Collection, the largest collection of its kind in the world, factors into the education as MSOE produces a well-rounded student. Having an atmosphere that incorporates the arts and humanities helps produce students who achieve great success due to their ability to think critically, vigorously - and creatively. MSOE students learn to solve problems and to apply what they learn to new and various situations.

At MSOE, art is not just for art's sake. Art creates students who can solve problems in a multiplicity of ways.
