Over 70 universities and 1600 students from throughout the country entered he competition in their respective regional competitions. The MSOE students are enrolled in the Architectural Engineering and Building Construction Department.
Since the inception of the competition in 1999, MSOE has had five national championship teams and placed either second or third five times as well. MSOE is the only university in the in the Design-Build competition without a school of architecture program.
The Design Build Competition was sponsored and judged by Hensel Phelps, one of the nation's largest design builders. The team of six MSOE students prepared an architectural design, construction estimate, schedule, and mechanical design to a panel of national experts. The proposed project was the University of Northern Colorado $46 million student housing project. The team was presented with numerous architectural design, construction and mechanical challenges. Two "all-nighters" were required, which also tested the student's endurance. Judges commented on the team's exceptional presentation skills, responsive questions and overall architectural design solution.
Other regional winners that MSOE competed against in the National Competition include Clemson University (first place), University of Oklahoma, University of Washington, Iowa State University (third place), Brigham Young University, and Roger Williams University.
Each team member was awarded a second place trophy, and the MSOE Architectural Engineering and Building Construction Department received a donation check for the Construction Management program. This is the seventh straight year that MSOE fielded at least one team in the national championships and the fifth straight year MSOE has placed in the competition.
