The LeRoy Butler Learning Center
Former Green Bay Packer LeRoy Butler wishes to develop a non-profit community center on a five acre site in the city of Milwaukee to provide learning and athletic opportunities for central city youth. Programmed spaces in the building include a gym, an indoor water park, after school classrooms, and life skills training. Exterior proposed spaces include a football field, basketball courts, a baseball field and adequate parking for buses and visitors. Many of the client specific goals are to have a facility that is fun and exciting to be in, that will have low operational costs with energy efficient building systems, can be phased, and can be repeated in other communities around Wisconsin. The estimated building size is 60,000 square feet with a projected development cost of $20 million. The student's design will need to be LEED certified. The client is the LeRoy Butler Foundation headed by Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame member LeRoy Butler.
New Vertical Farm Facility for SweetWater Organics
This year's challenge is to design a new vertical farm facility for SweetWater Organics that can operate in Milwaukee year round. Their current facility is housed in a reclaimed industrial building just south of downtown Milwaukee. The expansion of their operation will be on the same site and include space for aquaponics, rooms for educational programs for the public as well as packaging, storage and shipping. Long-range plans for the site include studio space for artisans, condominiums and a restaurant, although this is beyond the scope ofthis project. Although a budget of $30 million dollars was given at the start of this project, solutions are varied in scale and the budget will depend on the scope of each team's proposal. The design-build project delivery system will be used by the project teams.
OnePark East: A new Office Building, Theatre and Parking Structure Complex
The client team, consisting of Rainier Properties and the Marcus Theaters Corp., wishes to build a new multi-function complex in the northern downtown Milwaukee region. The project is intended to be a significant destination for the expanding downtown business district. The site is located on the east side of the Milwaukee River and is bounded by East Cherry Street on the north, North Water Street on the east and East Knapp Street on the south. The new building will consist of the following major functions: a multi-story Office Building (approximately 280,000 square feet); a grouping of 7-8 Theatres (approximately 55,000 square feet); and a 500-car parking structure. The budget is approximately $100 million. The client team is represented by Bruce Westling of Rainier Properties and Katie Falvey of the Marcus Theatres Corporation.
Lakeshore State Park Visitor's Center
A visitor's center on Lakeshore State Park has been part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plan since the inception of the park. The Friends of Lakeshore State Park and the DNR wish to develop a Living Building Challenge certified building which has net-zero energy, water and carbon usage. The program consists of a large flexible lobby space that can be used to advertise Wisconsin's State Park system and for public events. A large plaza connects to the lobby space so indoor/outdoor events can be held there. There will also be DNR offices, A DNR classroom, DNR park facilities, a 24-hour boater's lounge, and restrooms.
