BE Alumni Profiles: Adam Kiefert

Adam Kiefert '99
Lead Programmer - Enhancements Engineering
Kaiser Permanente

Position Description:
I currently work for the Colorado region of Kaiser Permanente. They recently purchased the entire suite of products from Epic Systems Corp. in Madison, Wis.. I previously worked at Epic Systems as a database programmer/analyst and now I'm working with Kaiser Permanente to implement their new system. My job right now consists of anything and everything related to the Epic products including training other IT staff, custom programming, implementation planning, migration of current data to the new platform, troubleshooting, system maintenance and system analysis.

Necessary education or experience:
B.S. degree. Extensive programming and database analysis experience.

Key skills that are necessary to be successful in your position:
People, computer programming and database analysis skills.

A description of your path to your current position:
I started at Epic Systems Corp. the summer I graduated from MSOE with a B.S. in biomedical engineering. I was a database programmer/analyst at Epic for four years. I then relocated to Denver and began working at Kaiser Permanente in their IT department consulting for them.

Good (and bad) aspects of your current position:
I'm the only person here who knows the system, which puts me at a great advantage. The other great thing about my job is the management. They are very appreciative and always let me know that I've done a good job.

What do you enjoy about your current position?
A lot less stress than my last job. I feel like I'm actually being paid what I'm worth.

Any other advice?
I think it's important for BEs to remember that they may choose to pursue something different than the BE field. I ended up working for a software company and then for a large health care organization. So they should make sure they keep an open mind about what they are going to end up doing and not blow off some class just because they think it won't be relevant.

On MSOE and Biomedical Engineering

Do you think a degree in BE is a good choice?
Yes, of course! I think that the BE major provides a larger array of knowledge than some of the other majors.

Do you think MSOE is a good choice of colleges?
Yes. MSOE was the one and only school I applied to. I didn't even bother applying to a back-up school. MSOE is a great place to get an engineering degree.

Why did you choose MSOE's BE program?
I always excelled in biology and the other life sciences as well as math. I wanted to be an engineer, so BE seemed like the most logical choice for me.

What did you like about MSOE?
I really liked the small class sizes. I could never imagine having to go to a lecture where the professor didn't know who you are. I think it makes the students feel like the professors care about their education and it also allows the professors to have a great deal more interaction with the students, which is very important. There always was someone to answer my questions.

What did you like about the BE program?
I liked the focus on the life sciences like biology and chemistry, and the focus on electrical engineering. If I wasn't doing what I'm doing now, I would have liked to do something with electronics. BE also forces you to work in a group right off the bat so you really get to used to working with other people and attend meetings, which is a HUGE part of any job in the real world.

What did you like about the student activities and student life at MSOE?
A smaller college environment means you always felt welcome at all the student events and activities. There was never a situation where things seemed overcrowded. It also meant that you recognized or were friends with most of the student body which always is nice.

Now that you have graduated and are in the workforce, are you happy with the education that you received in the BE program at MSOE?
Yes. Although I'm not doing anything related to what I went to school for, I think my level of education was excellent. I'm also certain that because of my schooling, I could easily get a job in the BE field if I wanted to.
