IEEE Computer Society (IEECS) has been offering the "Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) Program" since March 2002. This program offers software professionals an opportunity to certify their professional status.

In December 2007, IEEE Computer Society offered for the first time the "Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) Program." This new certification program is created for those entering the software development profession. By developing the CSDA credential, the Computer Society is responding to requests from industry for a way to confirm the skill and knowledge levels of those just entering the software field.

CSDA takes a broad view of software development and validates knowledge of the foundations of computer science, mathematics and engineering.  Core software engineering principles are covered, including software construction, software design, software testing, software requirements and software methods. The CSDA certification is based on:

  1. The Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) and
  2. Software Engineering 2004:  Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Degree Programs in Software Engineering (SE2004).

Two of our seniors, Bob Geboy and John Regner, took the exam in January 2008. I am very excited to announce that both of them passed the exam with flying colors. As I mentioned earlier, this was the first time that the exam was offered and they took the exam without a lot of practice test materials being available to them and without any special help from their instructors. I am very hopeful that a lot more students will be taking this exam in the future.

Please join me in congratulating Bob and John on their achievement!
