Summer SE Programs
Posted 07/23/2008
The Software Engineering program hosted two groups of high-school students (July 7-11 and July 21-25) for the Computer & Software Engineering FOCUS programs. Initially, we were supposed to hold only one session from July 21-25, but that session filled up so quickly and there was such a waiting list that we decided to open up another session that was run from July 7-11.
This intense, week-long summer camp challenges the students to explore a specific career field. They get hands-on exposure by working on exciting projects. For the software engineering portion of the program, the students created a game or a movie using a program called Alice. It was amazing to see the games and movies that they were able to develop in just one and a half days. I have included snapshots of some of the games and movies that the students developed.

Here is what the students had to say when they were asked as to what was the "Best thing about the SE portion of the FOCUS program":
- Self set pace, not forced by anyone.
- Hands-on experience.
- Creating your own movie.
- Learning how to use Alice. I had never used it before.
- Working with computers and creating video games.
- It gave you a chance to work with a new OO programming language and is something I can explore even more on my own at home.
