Corporate Account Executive
PC Mall Business Solutions
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Question: Tell us about your job: Where do you work? What is your job title? How long have you had this position?
Scott: I have been a Corporate Account Executive at PC Mall Business Solutions for over a year. PC Mall works as a business-to-business provider of computer hardware, networking equipment, software licensing, etc.
I am also working to develop my own multimedia company called Innerspace Technologies. Currently, I am a Multimedia Design Specialist, and I am in charge of programmers and business development.
Question: What are your key duties at work? What is a typical day like?
Scott: As a Corporate Account Executive, I spend much of my time either on the phone with clients and prospective clients or involved in company meetings. When I am talking with clients and prospective clients, I inform them of new computer solutions to meet their needs, update them on current projects, and process their orders. I also do a great deal of training and research on products and other business solutions for my clients. Sometimes I do cold calling, where I try to gain new clients by informing companies of our products and services.
Question: Does your job involve travel?
Scott: I don't do any traveling in my job.
Question: What do you like most about your job?
Scott: I like working with and talking to people in the business world. I have good interpersonal skills, and this job allows for a lot of networking. I also like the flexibility I have with my schedule and the fact that I have control over how I plan my day.
Question: What is the least favorite part of the job?
Scott: I don't feel that I am using my full potential in this job and I don't like working for someone else. However, I hope to be working for my own company in the future.
Question: How did you become interested in Technical Communications?
Scott: I started at MSOE as a mechanical engineering student with a minor in technical communication. I gradually became more interested in technical communication and figured that it would apply to my interests more than mechanical engineering. Around my sophomore year at MSOE, I reevaluated my interests and decided to major in TC.
Question: Do you consider yourself to be a Technical Communicator? How do you feel your job is suited for a TC? Do people with other backgrounds also perform your type of job?
Scott: I use technical communication every day, so I absolutely feel that I am a technical communicator. When I am dealing with other businesses, I have to obtain enough information about their organization to analyze their business computer needs. This is a large part of the sales procedure. Then I have to explain our products to the clients and tell them why their company will benefit from these products.
People in this line of work tend to have some sort of communication or sales knowledge and experience. Backgrounds can range from psychology to liberal arts to technical sales. Many people have some experience in sales or retail.
