Technical Communication Internships

Internships are a way to put your skills to use and prove to employers you can get the job done. These are examples of internships completed by MSOE TC students.

Company:  Mortgagebot.com

Student:  Mark Goodger

Faculty Supervisor:  Dr. David Howell

Description:  Mark's primary responsibility was maintaining the documents that Mortgagebot uses to collect information from its partners.  This includes any updates needed to existing documents as well as the creation of new documents. Mark also engaged in numerous research projects, helped in the generation of a training program for new employees, coordinated presentations for the Mortgagebot annual Partner Conference, and enhanced a variety of specification documents.

Company:  Brady Corp.

Student:  Matt Fiel

Faculty Supervisor:  Jim Friauf

Description:  Matt's position at Brady Corp. wasunique.  He worked at a branch of Brady Die Cut, working with Site Builder - an in-house Web tool - to modify the company website.  The Brady DieCut.com website went through three distinct revisions, settling on an aesthetic and organizational direction that worked for their target market.

Company:  DuctSox Corp.

Student:  Stephanie Piechowski

FacultySupervisor:  David Tietyen

Description:  Stephanie engaged in a number of projects as a marketing intern.  She was often given the task of taking articles, written by an outsourced technical writer, and editing the technical jargon and non-critical information.  Then, she would revise the story in a format to be printed, using Adobe InDirect, AdobePhotoshop, and Adobe Illustrator to pull photos, headlines, and text together.  She also worked on a web registry; Web registries position a website better in a search engine.  Finally, she enhanced submittals - documents given in a booklet format to the customer after a sale has been made.

Company:  Virtual Care Provider Inc.

Student:  Sunny Raspet

Faculty Supervisor:  Dr. David Howell

Description:  Sunny was assigned to move a pilot group of facilities, the Western Operations division, to an electronic SARF process.  She was responsible for the design, implementation, project management, and process improvement.  She created a project charter, a process that required her to facilitate communication among a variety of people within the organization - from the vice president in charge of the Western division to the system engineer in charge of the electronic forms.  Once she gathered the external requirements, she fleshed out the implementation specifications, conducted documentation and testing, and implemented a final test prior to going live. The process was an unqualified success.

Company:  HK Systems Inc.

Student:  Ben Kroger

Faculty Supervisor:  Dr. Katie Wikoff

Description:  Ben helped HK Systems update the company's proposal templates.  Ben gave a great deal of effort to the HK 1000 crane model template by initiating a relationship with the subject-matter experts involved in the project.  He was able to update the text with the Microsoft Word comment feature.  The project required Ben to exercise effective communication skills - attributes that were highlighted by his managers.
