The Field
Are you someone who likes to solve problems and make decisions based on tried and true mathematical calculations? Operations research analysts do just that. And MSOE is the only university in Wisconsin to offer a bachelor’s degree in this field!
It had its formal beginnings during World War II, when the military used it to deploy radar effectively, get supplies efficiently to where they were needed the most and to search for enemy submarines. In most of today’s companies, operations research involves helping to plan business ventures, analyze operations, allocate resources, measure performances and schedules, manage supply chains, set prices, coordinate transportation and more.
Our Program
MSOE offers an intimate, interactive learning environment. Operations research students will take many of the same courses as industrial engineers, but upon graduation, they’ll be employed in the business side of companies rather than the engineering department. MSOE professors have years of industry and business experience, ensuring that you will be prepared for the next step of your career.
Graduates of MSOE’s operations research program will:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in applied mathematics, especially in probability and statistics, optimization, dynamic programming, linear and nonlinear programming computer programming and computer applications such as: statistical analysis, database management, and programming languages.
- Display an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities
- Display in-depth communications, management and teamwork skills
- Be well prepared to be accepted and successfully complete a master’s degree in operations research
MSOE offers an engaging environment, where you learn and form friendships with professors and classmates. Growing as a person is stressed as well as growing intellectually.
We are connected across campus, but also within the community. You have time to visit the cultural sites that surround our campus, volunteer in the community, or go out for some fun.
The Results
Operations research analysts use simulation (which gives them the ability to try out approaches and test the ideas); optimization (which narrows the choices to the best); and probability and statistics (which helps them measure risk, test conclusions and make a reliable forecast) in a number of industries, including insurance, government and transportation.
Almost every industry hires operations research analysts:
- Auto manufacturers optimize the way they design and test vehicle prototypes.
- Package delivery companies design their overnight delivery network. Airlines design faster crew recovery plan in case of schedule disruptions, flight delays and cancellations.
- Broadcasting companies improve advertising sales plans to increase revenue.
