Senior Design Projects

Snowmobile Mobility and Storage System

Student:  Scott Joers

Advisor:   Dr. Siphon Jacque

The design of a maintenance stand / storage cart for a standard snow mobile. A full-scale prototype of the device was fabricated for the project.

Design of a Dual-Action Can Crusher

Student:  Alex Koehler

Advisor:  Dr. Joseph Musto

The design of an aluminum can crushing device that has improved efficiency by functioning to crush multiple cans in a single back-and-forth motion.

Mobile Hydraulic Test Cart

Students:  Keith Pomerenke, John Wilson

Advisor:   Professor Thomas Wanke

The design of a mobile hydraulic test cart that can make on-site measurements of hydraulic system performance.

Redesign of a Conveyor Belt Track

Student:  Gregory Michalak

Advisor:   Professor David Gerow

The re-design of a conveyor belt track, with the goal of simplify the assembly process while maintaining appropriate structural performance.

Analysis of Forces and Features in an ECG Thermal Printer Design

Student:  Terrence Smith

Advisor:  Dr. Charles Tritt

A study and analysis of design features that have greatest influence on the performance thermal printer heads.

A Fixed Rudder Design

Student:  David VanKammen

Advisor:  Professor Thomas Wanke

A proposed design for a low-speed rudder to be used on a small fishing boat.

Design of a Mechanical Cart and Lift

Students:  Chad Weister, Dave Ruehlow

Advisor:   Professor  Stephen Rather

The project investigates improvements in lift mechanisms and construction designs for a go-cart lift.

Redesign of an  IC Engine Crankcase

Student:  Christopher Welch

Advisor:  Dr. C. Xykis

The project develops design changes to an exiting internal combustion engine crank case.

Energy Harvesting as a Power Source for Wireless HVAC Sensors

Student:  Phil Bushong

Advisor:  Dr. John Pakkala

The project investigates whether a wireless building control system (HVAC) can be powered by harvesting energy available in the air stream.

Comparison of Analytical Stress-Strain Solutions to Finite Element Solutions for Circular Holes in a Plate

Student:   Kevin Hill

Advisor:  Dr. C. Xykis

The project investigates which Finite Element Modeling techniques using the PATRAN/NASTRAN software give results consistent with classical analytical models.

Design Fault Detection and Optimization Using Solidification Software

Student:  Brian Stendler

Advisor:  Dr. Cynthia Barnicki

The project will investigate use of new software developed to simulate solidification of molten metals, with a goal of curing known porosity problems in a particular metal casting.
