The mechanical engineering technology (MET) program combines MSOE’s state-of-the-art laboratories and expert professors with a convenient, flexible schedule. The program emphasizes the application of mathematics and sciences to the implementation and extension of existing technology in the area of mechanical design, fluid power, and instrument controls.

The program is designed to accommodate transfer students and working professional students, especially those with associate degrees in mechanical design and related fields. In particular, the program is offered in the evenings only,and is primarily designed for working, part-time students.
Typically, students will enroll for two classes per quarter. The classes shown in the curriculum track are paired so that the required courses can be taken on the same nights of the week. The degree also may be pursued on a full-time basis, with all technical courses offered during the evening hours.

The undergraduate engineering technology programs at MSOE:

  • introduce and integrate math and sciences as needed in the curricula
  • contain technical courses that occur in virtually every quarter of the programs
  • have an intensive laboratory and applications focus
  • have a moderate emphasis on theory and the design process
  • appeal to the student who learns best in an experientially based (hands-on) environment
  • culminate in a senior project experience

The results

The three-year average placement rate for MSOE mechanical engineering technology graduates is 93%, and graduates enjoyed an average starting salary of $69,300 in 2015-2016.

The field

Those with MET degrees are real hands-on people. They work with manufacturing and machinery—and people—and have the skills to manage them all. They also have the skills to devise ways to adapt machinery, such as redevelop a supply line for a new product.

With such a practical approach and a strong understanding of applying engineering concepts, MET graduates have careers in:

You may want to consider MET if you …

  • desire or need the associate of applied science (AAS) degree to enter the workforce as a technician with the option to continue in a BS in engineering technology program
  • desire to continue your education in a program that extends and expands the educational approach of your existing AAS in engineering technology degree

MET Curriculum

MET students have the option to complete the program as a full- or part-time student. The curriculum introduces technical courses at an early stage. Mathematics and science courses are integrated into the curriculum as they are applied in the technical courses. Humanities, Social Science and Communication courses are spread throughout the curriculum. With this arrangement of courses, part-time students experience a continuous blend of technical and support classes throughout the program. Two technical electives and one free elective allow students to focus on an area of interest; however, the program is designed to produce well-rounded graduates who are competent in all areas of mechanical engineering technology.

Transfer agreements with many of Wisconsin’s technical colleges allow for transfer of as many credits as possible. Contact an admission counselor for more information on transfer credits.

Goals and Objectives

Completion of the program results in granting the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology degree. Graduates will obtain industrial employment in product design and development, sales, automated equipment design, testing, field service and start-up, and applications, as well as in manufacturing, production processes, plant facilities and automated machinery service.

Program Educational Objectives

The mechanical engineering technology program at MSOE will prepare graduates for professional success in:

  • technical careers, including product design, development and testing, manufacturing, and field sales and service.

Student Outcomes

Upon graduation from the mechanical engineering technology program the student will have:
