John Duncan '79 has always been interested in technical things. "I always tinkered with cars and mechanics," Duncan remembered, "so by the time I was ready for college, I knew I wanted a technical education." Duncan, who is now the president of Off-Road Driveline Technology and Axle Systems for ZF Group North American Operations, chose to get his Associates of Applied Science degree in Fluid Power Engineering Technology and his Bachelor’s in Industrial Management at MSOE because of its reputation as a leader in fluid power education. "At MSOE I received a very practical education," Duncan noted. "I received hands-on practice at one of the most recognized fluid power programs in the nation and eventually became a Fellow and worked at the Fluid Power Institute after earning my 2-year degree."
Duncan believes that it is important for engineering students to pursue business education to be innovative and more sought-after in their fields. Duncan has his master's in business from Lake Forest Graduate School. "I firmly believe that students need a business understanding. Business is what drives the economy. Business and engineering are both very important in today’s increasingly competitive marketplace," Duncan said.
In his free time, John enjoys riding his motorcycle with MSOE’s Executive Motorcycle Club and he enjoys spending time with his wife, Beth, children and grandchildren. “Our two grandsons are a new and constant joy to us—perhaps they will be MSOE candidates in a few years!”

The Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs
A protean artist, actor, and furniture-maker dedicated to individual expression, Charles Rohlfs (1853–1936) called his designs "artistic furniture." His inventive forms and imaginative carving combined many influences, from the abstract naturalism of Art Nouveau styling to the pared-down oak forms that became hallmarks of the Arts and Crafts movement.
