MILWAUKEE - Junior center Carol Cayo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team for District 5. Cayo is an industrial engineering major and carries a GPA of 3.97. She also received this honor during the 2009-10 season.
The teams are selected by College Sports Information Directors of America and recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom. Cayo now moves on to the national Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot and those honorees will be selected later this month.
Cayo recently became the seventh player in the history of the MSOE women's basketball program to hit the 1,000-point plateau as she reached the mark in just her third season. She already owns the all-time NAC record for career blocked shots. Cayo currently leads the Raiders in scoring (17.9), rebounding (11.4), steals (30) and blocks (55). In all of Division III, Cayo is 17th in double-doubles (11), 21st in rebounding and 27th in blocked shots. She was named First Team All-NAC last season and NAC Freshman of the Year during the 2008-09 season.
MSOE is currently 7-12 and 4-8 in NAC action. The Raiders face crosstown foe Wisconsin Lutheran on the road Saturday at 1 p.m. in Milwaukee.
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The University Division team includes NCAA Division I participants, while the College Division team combines NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
