Haven, Wis.-- Behind by two strokes after the first day of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament, the MSOE men's golf team shot the low round of the tournament (313) on day two of the event propelling them into the lead to claim the conference title. MSOE, in their first season of competition in the Northern Athletics Conference, claims their first NAC championship in any sport.
Conference honors for the Raiders include Frank Roucek (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) being named to the All-NAC team and coach Joe Meloy receiving Coach of the Year honors. Meloy, the dean of NAC coaches and an MSOE Hall of Famer, won two of the last three conference championships MSOE has participated in. This is Meloy's 11th conference championship and coach of the year honor.
The Raiders had several spectacular performances, led by sophomore Sam Meyers (Mequon, Wis./Homestead), who finished the two-day event with a 156 total score, placing him second just two shots behind NAC champion Daniel Behm of Wisconsin Lutheran. Teammate Roucek, who was chosen Rookie of the Year by the conference coaches, tied for third place with Andrew Delaney of Benedictine (158).
Other Raider golfers who shot their way to the title were Josh Fenske (Verona, Wis./ Verona) (164, 11th place), Erik Macias-Simeon ( Mexico City, Mexico/IETSM) (168, T-17) and Peter Eich (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) (170, T-22).
The Raiders finished the event with a score of 645, followed by Benedictine University (654), Aurora University, and Marian College tied for third place (666) among the nine schools competing at the Whistling Straits Irish Course in Haven, Wisconsin.
The Men's golf team, who has no seniors on the varsity squad, has completed their fall season and will continue on the links in the spring.
