MSOE defeats Lake Forest in home opener; Ostapina collects 100th MSOE win

Despite a third period assault by the Lake Forest Foresters, the MSOE Raiders held on to a 2-1 victory in their season home opener in front of a crowd of 651 in attendance. Mark Ostapina, in his eighth year as MSOE's head coach, reached a milestone on the night, as he won his 100th game as a Raider.

MSOE outshot Lake Forest 41-16 on the night. The Raider's scored one goal in both the first and second period, only to have Lake Forest tack on a goal in the third period. MSOE held on to pace their way to their first victory of the season.

In the first period, MSOE got on the scoreboard with 2:39 left in the period on a goal from Brock King with an assist by Captain Jason Woll. In the period, Lake Forest had three penalties for six minutes, compared to the Raider's two penalties and four minutes of penalty box time. The Raiders dominated shots in the period, outgunning the Foresters 14 to four. Both teams could not score on the power play; MSOE was 0-3, while Lake Forest was 0-1 for the period.

In the second period, MSOE got on the scoreboard again, with a goal by Assistant Captain Stephen Smiddy a pass from sophomore center Michael Soik, bringing the score to 2-0. MSOE controlled the tempo in the period, taking 15 shots to the Forester's five. Again, neither team's power play could score a goal. Lake Forest spent ten minutes in the penalty box, in contrast to the Raider's four minutes of penalties in the second stanza.

Lake Forest struck early in the third on an unassisted goal by David Ridos just 4:56 into the period. Connor Toomey, who had 15 saves on the night for the Raiders, had six of them in the period holding off the last minute Lake Forest attack.

MSOE returns to action tomorrow night in Lake Forest, Illinois as the two teams square off again finishing out their home and home schedule.
