Men's Volleyball recap

On the ten year anniversary of the MSOE men's volleyball program, the Raiders had their best year ever as they finished the season ranked 10th in the nation which is highest ranking by any MSOE varsity program.

The Raiders had a team record 17 wins in 2010 and lost only four matches against Division III opponents. Victories included wins over national power NYU, 9th ranked MIT at the MIT tournament in Boston and 8th ranked Carthage twice as MSOE went on to win the Midwest-III Volleyball Conference Title.

The Raiders received many conference accolades including senior setter Chris Brandt (Darien, Ill./ Hinsdale South) being named Most Valuable Player. Seniors Jon Holzbauer (Menomee Falls, Wis./Pius IX) and Glenn Frazee (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) along with sophomore Max Martin (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) joined Brandt on the All-Conference team. Midwest-III Freshman of the Year honors went to Jack Geary (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette) who was also received All-Conference honors.

National recognition went to junior Chris Reininger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) being named the AVC National player of the week on March 29. The middle hitter began the week with a 12-kill, three-dig, two-block outing in MSOE's sweep of Carthage, which allowed the Raiders to clinch a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Midwest-III Volleyball Conference Tournament. He followed by totaling 11 kills, three digs, three blocks and an ace in MSOE's whitewashing of Fontbonne. Reininger capped the week by netting three kills, two digs, two aces and a block, while only seeing action in one game of the Raiders' blanking of Mount St. Joseph. For the week, Reininger averaged 4.64 points, 1.42 digs and nearly one block per game, while hitting a sizzling .657.

The Raiders graduate four starters including Brandt, Holzbauer, Frazee and Evan Simatic (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) but return nine players and add five freshmen to the roster for 2010-2011.
