MSOE Athletics Highlights from 2009-2010

With the start of the upcoming athletic season ahead of us, we look back and reminisce on the Raiders great accomplishments for 2009-2010. Athletic Director Dan Harris with some assistance from Sports Information Director Brian Gibboney put together a top ten list of accomplishments for the year. This list chronicles just some of the highlights from last season.
#10 - Baseball garners two First Team All-NAC Selections
MSOE seniors Mike Brunette (De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) and Michael Merk (Oakfield, Wis./Oakfield) were named to the First Team All-Conference for the 2010 baseball season. It's the first time since the days of the Lake Michigan Conference that MSOE had two players receive a first team nod. In 1997, MSOE outfielder Nate Weber and catcher Matt Kaiser made the All-LMC team.
Brunette led the Raiders with a batting average of .435, an on-base percentage of .535 and 40 RBIs. The MSOE starting catcher also hit three home runs, eight doubles and scored 29 runs.
Merk hit .420 this past season with a .500 on-base percentage. The second baseman led the team with five triples, six home runs and a slugging percentage of .713. Merk had 18 doubles, 33 RBIs and 49 runs.
#9 - Men's Lacrosse opens inaugural season
MSOE grows to 22 varsity sports with the addition of men's lacrosse to the school's lineup. Head coach Robin Buckley led the Raiders into the 2009-2010 campaign after heading up MSOE's club program. They collected their first victory against Lake Forest in 2010.
#8 - Wrestler Matt Olsen named NWCA Academic All-American
MSOE senior Matt Olsen was named to the NWCA Scholar All-American team. The Algonquin, Illinois native is an Architectural Engineering and Construction Management major. Olsen won the Northern Wrestling Association (NWA) championship at the 184 pound weight class. Also, Olsen finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional. During the 2008-09 season, Olsen came in second in the NWA tournament and was 26-12 during the year with 47 escapes, 41 takedowns and 26 near falls.
Two seasons ago, he placed first at the NWA tournament and was 23-14. He was second on the team in reversals and near falls, fourth in takedowns and escapes. During his freshman campaign, Olsen had an overall record of 22-15 and placed second at the NWA tournament.
#7 - Carol Cayo's individual accomplishments
Sophomore center Carol Cayo (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) had a great 2009-2010 as she was recognized both academically and athletically for her achievements. Cayo was named to the first team Academic All-District team by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). Cayo is an Industrial Engineering major carrying a 3.98 grade point average.
Cayo was named to the First Team All-NAC for her performances during this past year. She finished 13th in scoring (12.8 per game) in the NAC, first in rebounding (11 per game), third in field goal percentage (49%), sixth in steals (2.4 per game), second in blocks (2.8 per game) and first in double-doubles with 13 during the 2009-2010 season. Also, Cayo was 17th in the country in blocks per game and 31st nationally in rebounding. She was named to the Inside Wisconsin Sports Division III Preseason Team.
#6 Joe Westrich named NAC Defensive Player of the Year for men's soccer
Junior Joe Westrich (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) was named NAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. The co-captain scored six goals and had on assists 21 games last season. Westrich was also named to the All-NAC First Team and the All-Wisconsin NCAA Division men's soccer First Team. He lead the Raiders to a 9-1-1 NAC record and a 13-6-2 overall mark.
#5 Men's Volleyball defeats Carthage for first time in the school's history
Back on March 24, 2010, the MSOE men's volleyball upset 12th ranked Carthage College in three straight sets (30-24, 30-27, 30-26) to tie Carthage for first place in the Midwest-III Volleyball Conference. Leading the way for MSOE was junior Chris Reininger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) who hit an amazing .688 with 12 kills.
Also, sophomore Max Martin (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) had 16 kills for the Raiders while senior Glenn Frazee (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) had 10. Senior Chris Brandt (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) ended up with 41 assists while senior Jon Holzbauer (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Pius IX) had 12 digs. MSOE hit .316 as a team on the night.
#4 Men's Soccer places second in conference, finishes eighth in region
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) ranked MSOE eighth in the Central Region in the final regular season poll during the 2009 season. The Raiders lost the NAC Championship 1-0 to Dominican University who fell in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament. MSOE finished 2009 with a 13-6-2 overall record and was 9-1-1 in the NAC.
Junior Joe Westrich (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's ) was named Defensive Player of the Year and Jimmy Banks was selected as the NAC Coach of the Year. Both MSOE co-captains, Westrich and senior Brandon Crozier (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), were First Team All-NAC selections. Crozier had four goals and five assists in 21 games played. Sophomore Michael Vanek (Greenfield, Wis./South Milwaukee) also joined Crozier and Westrich on the NAC first team. Vanek was the team leader in goals scored with seven, and had three assists.
Junior Dan Kolokoski (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and senior Rock Ridolfi (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) were second team All-NAC selections. Kolokoski had three goals and four assists. Ridolfi returned from an injury in 2008 to receive conference honors in 2009. Senior goaltender Alex Mejac (Greenfield, Wis./Whitnall) was a NAC Honorable Mention selection. Mejac's 13 wins in goal is the university record for most wins in a season. Brad Meissner (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Dominic Ridolfi (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) and Jordan Werner (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic) made the NAC All-Freshman Team.
#3 Austin Meier named to CoSIDA First Team Academic All America and Second Team NABC All Region
The leading scoring on the MSOE men's basketball team, junior Austin Meier (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) was named to the College of Sports Information Director's (CoSIDA) and ESPN the Magazine's Academic All-America First Team. Meier is a double major in Architectural Engineering and Construction Management and holds a 3.95 GPA.
On the basketball floor, Meier was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III All-District Second Team for the Midwest Region as well as to the First Team All-NAC. Meier averaged 16.4 points per contest, 8.6 rebounds a game, 2.3 steals per game, 1.3 blocks each contest and shot 58% from the field during the 2009-2010 season. Two seasons ago, Meier was named Rookie of the Year in the NAC and last year he was named to the First Team All-NAC.
#2 Men's Volleyball takes conference title; finishes tenth in the nation
On the ten year anniversary of the MSOE men's volleyball program's inception, the Raiders had their best year ever as they finished the season ranked 10th in the nation which is highest ranking by any MSOE varsity program.
The Raiders had a team record 17 wins in 2010 and lost only four matches against Division III opponents. Victories included wins over national power NYU, 9th ranked MIT at the MIT tournament in Boston and 8th ranked Carthage twice as MSOE went on to win the Midwest-III Volleyball Conference Title.
The Raiders received many conference accolades including senior setter Chris Brandt (Darien, Ill./ Hinsdale South) being named Most Valuable Player. Seniors Jon Holzbauer (Menomee Falls, Wis./Pius IX) and Glenn Frazee (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) along with sophomore Max Martin (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) joined Brandt on the All-Conference team. Midwest-III Freshman of the Year honors went to Jack Geary (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette) who was also received All-Conference honors.
National recognition went to junior Chris Reininger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's) as he was named the AVC national player of the week March 29.
#1 Men's Tennis wins conference title; competes in NCAA Tournament
The MSOE men's tennis team won its first Northern Athletics Conference Championship in 2010 and participated in the NCAA Tournament in May. The Raiders won four titles at the NAC Championship as they gathered 54 points at the two-day event in New Berlin, Wis.
Junior Mark Schadler (Walton, Ky./Simon Kenton) won the number five singles championship by the score of 6-0, 6-2 in the final match. Senior Fabian Griebel (Hamburg, Germany/Ammersbeck) took home the number six singles title. Griebel won the final match 6-2, 6-1. Junior Dustin Holzhauer (Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) and freshman Zach Weaver (Orlando, Fla./Fremont) combined to take the crown at number one doubles. They won the championship match 8-5. Senior Andrew Ohland (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa East) and Schadler won the number three doubles championship by the same score in their last match.
During the regular season, MSOE went undefeated during conference action as they gathered an 8-0 record in those matches. The Raiders finished the season with a 10-6 overall record. The team of Holzhauer and Weaver went 9-1 during the season with a 5-0 regular season NAC record. Ohland and Schadler combined to go 10-4 during the 2010 season and 6-0 during the conference regular season. Schadler, Ohland and Montenegro all logged a 7-1 NAC record in singles action while Weaver went 6-1. Griebel finished the season on a seven match winning streak. Sophomore Jeff Scarpelli (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) went 5-2 during the regular season for the Raiders.
