MSOE men's golf 2010-2011 season preview
One year removed from participating in the NCAA Division III Championships, MSOE looks to return to the top of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) as they begin their 2010 campaign. The Raiders were selected to finish third in this year's NAC preseason poll. Last season, the Raiders finished fourth at the NAC Championship and fifth at the NAC Spring AQ Meet.

Junior Dane Zachman (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wauwatosa West) will lead the way for MSOE this season. Zachman finished fourth at the NAC Championship in 2009.

"He's always strong and will continue to be strong," said head coach Joe Meloy.

Also returning for the Raiders are seniors Peter Eich (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) who finished second at the 2008 NAC Championship, Ray Larsen (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North), Jason Arnes (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) and sophomore Zach Teague (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore). Newcomers include freshmen Scott Loftus (Germantown, Wis./Germantown), Drew Liner (Elkhorn, Wis.) and Zach Maassen (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish). Coach Meloy gives the freshmen a fair shot of playing for his team.

"I don't care if you're a freshman, "Meloy said. "If you beat out the other guys, you beat out the other guys."

The 2009-2010 MSOE men's golf team received All-Academic Team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Squads receiving status as All-Academic teams have team GPAs of 3.0 or better.

"I'm very proud of that," Meloy said. "That's two years in a row. If they looked at our academics and we had above a 3.0 and look at our school and the challenges here academically. I would think we would win the grand prize every year."

The Raiders begin their 2010 season at the Edgewood College Fall Classic Sept. 3-4. The NAC Championship will take place Oct. 10-11 at Whistling Straits in Haven, Wis. The NAC Spring AQ Meet is April 18-19 at Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Ill. The combination of those two events determines the NAC team who qualifies for the NCAA Division III Championships.
