Senior forward Michael Soik scored his 50th career goal and junior forward Kyle Smith netted his first two goals on the season as the No. 11 Raiders defeated Lake Forest 6-1 Saturday night in the first game of the MCHA quarterfinals at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. Junior goaltender Connor Toomey made 19 saves in the victory.
Freshman forward Steven Shaffroth started the scoring at the 5:25 mark of the first period. After the Foresters tied the game later that period, Smith found the back of the net in the second period to give MSOE the lead for good. Freshman forward Austin Grosvenor added to the Raider advantage with a goal just about three minutes later.
MSOE pulled away in the final period as junior Todd Krupa, Soik and Smith all logged goals. Senior defenseman Aaron Humphries and Shaffroth each had three asissts while Soik recorded two assists. The Raiders (20-5-1) host Lake Forest Sunday at 3 p.m. MSOE needs a win or tie to advance to the MCHA Harris Cup Four. If the Foresters win, a 20-minute mini-game would be played immediately after regulation to determine which team will move on.
