Matthew Huset

MSOE Athletic Hall of Fame

Matt Huset's collegiate career is one of the most prolific in championships, titles and victories in the MSOE wrestling program's history.  Huset was unmatched on the mat, leading the team in wins with a career 108.  As a senior, Huset used his experience and skill to dominate his opponents, winning 30 consecutive matches and totaling 39 wins for the season.  He also won five different tournaments that year, finishing with a career 12 tournament victories.  The Lake Michigan Conference recognized Huset's accomplishments in the sport that year, naming him 2003 LMC Outstanding Wrestler.

Huset's championship winning record is impressive.   A four-time individual LMC champion and two-time regional runner-up, as captain he led the team to two team conference championships his junior and senior seasons.  He earned NCAA All-American status, the division's highest honor, placing eighth in Nationals in his weight class.  This was an extraordinary triumph on its own, but what made this accomplishment even more remarkable is that Huset was the first male NCAA All-American athlete in MSOE history.

Huset was an exemplary student, and his academic success was fundamental in the team's second place and two first place National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA III Academic All-American National Championship awards in 2001, 2002 and 2003, setting the foundation for the program's standard of academic excellence.  Huset was a two-time Academic NCAA All-American, a most significant division honor for academic and athletic achievement, and he was selected conference Scholar-Athlete in 2003.

Matt Huset was clearly a consummate competitor and scholar.  His superior performance as a leading student-athlete was a powerful force in the success and forward movement of the wrestling program.
