Many people are called upon to lead, but few can be a
leader and earn the respect that Thomas Gumpert did in his basketball career
from 1980 to 1982.
His positive approach to the game and life was instrumental in leading the 12-0 team of the 1981-1982 season to its first Conference championship.
"Tom was a leader and his presence was enjoyed by all," said fellow Hall of Famer and teammate Jeff Brezovar '83.
Gumpert, a fierce rebounder, averaged 16 rebounds per game in the 1981-1982 season. His dominance on the boards made him a major force on both offense and defense. Overshadowed by his rebounding, but no less important to the undefeated season, was Gumpert's outstanding ability to score the big basket. He proved the perfect complement to Brezovar, averaging 18 points per game. The numbers earned Gumpert All-Conference and All-District 16 team selections in the team's undefeated season.
