Emergency Action Play for Kern Center (Main Areas)

Address: 1245 N. Broadway

Ambulance Access: Enter through main doors on Broadway; Public Safety and/or Kern Center Staff will direct EMS crew to appropriate room and elevators as needed. Note for home MSOE Hockey games, EMS crew is on standby at ice level.

Emergency Equipment:

  •   Know location of all equipment and check condition of all equipment prior to event:
    • Splint Bag: Crutches, knee immobilizers, Prosplints, and C-Collars
    • Kit / fanny pack
    • Airway kit: CPR mask, BVM
    • Blood spill kit: biohazard bags, gloves, gauze, Cavicide/disinfectant spray
    • Cell phone (or land-line)
    • AED LOCATIONS:
      • Kern Arena - outside arena doors on weight room side of the wall of stairs between Arena lobby and weight room
      • Ice Rink - directly to the left of overhead door for Olympian machine (NE corner)

Roles of Emergency Response Team:

Role 1: Team Physician or ATC or First Respodner

  • First on scene, performs primary assessment
  • Begins emergency care (ex: CPR, rescue breathing) as necessary

Role 2: ATC, athletic training student(s), or coach

  • Accompany supervisor on court and assist as needed
  • Retrieve necessary emergency equipment as directed
  • If no other staff available, active EMS:
  • Call Public Safety ((414) 277-7159) and have them activate EMS response: 9-1-1
  • Report the nature and severity of the injury, what care is being administered, location and address, phone number; remain on line until dispatcher ends call

Role 3: Event coordinator, assistant coach, or designated manager

  • Activate EMS if not already done
  • Alert Kern Center staff of emergency
  • Meet EMS on Broadway Avenue and direct to location of patient

Role 4: Public Safety, Athletics/Events staff, and other coaches/managers

  • Crowd Control – keep uninjured players, fans, and others away from injury site and help clear area for EMS.


*Athletics staff or assistant coach should accompany athlete to hospital if possible .

Roles should be assigned prior to the event to individuals who are already adequately trained and comfortable with that role. Everyone should be aware of specific responsibilities and review procedures on a regular basis. Questions should be referred to the Head Athletic Trainer.
