Information for athletic-related injuries
Most medical care is provided on campus by the sports medicine staff and team physicians; however, there are times where care needs to be provided off campus. To defray the costs associated with these bills, MSOE has purchased a secondary insurance policy.
In order to optimize the benefits of MSOE's secondary insurance policy, the student-athlete must:
- complete our Insurance Information Form annually
- make a front and back copy of their insurance card annually
- update the Director of Sports Medicine if there are any changes to their insurance information
This information must be completed and turned in to the Sports Medicine Staff.
If you have bills related to an athletic injury during a MSOE sponsored practice or event, our secondary insurance may be able to assist in that reimbursement/payment. Bills will always access and utilize the primary insurance of the student before potentially accessing our secondary insurance (as long as the secondary information was provided to the facility at the time of treatment). Our secondary insurance has a $250 deductible that is to be met either by the primary insurance, the patient, or a combination of both. If the total of the bills is below $250, our secondary insurance policy will not be accessed. Should our secondary insurance be utilized and to help us pay those potential leftover bill amounts, it will then necessitate copies of both:
Itemized bills for the dates of service – itemized means it typically has a diagnosis code, code for procedure(s) performed, date of procedure, and sometimes a tax ID # for the facility or health care professional. Bills will be from the medical providers and facilities.
EOB’s (Explanation of Benefits) from the primary insurance for the bills on the above mentioned correlated dates of service/procedure. EOB’s will be from the insurance company.
* The Secondary Insurance Policy covers only injuries that have occurred from participation in a MSOE sanctioned practice or competition. The insurance policy does not cover preexisting injuries, illnesses (common cold, Flu, Mono, etc), and activities not sanctioned by MSOE athletics.
There may be more than one bill that is accrued on a visit – for example, if one gets an MRI, there is often a bill for the actual physical MRI performed and a separate bill for the reading of the MRI performed by the radiologist – both may be billed separately, thus one procedure, but two bills. Sometimes the places of business have to be called and the items requested be sent to you.
*It is the responsibility of the Student-Athlete to obtain and supply the MSOE Sports Medicine Staff this information.
What is NOT covered by MSOE’s secondary insurance policy?
- Illnesses (flu, mono, common cold visits)
- Pre-existing injuries
- Injuries that occur outside of official practices or competitions sanctioned by MSOE
