Chicago – In a rematch form earlier in the season, the MSOE Raiders held off the charging Cougars of Saint Xavier, winning in five sets by the scores of 25- 21, 18-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-13. Brian Main led all Raiders with a .667 hitting percentage, earning 14 kills, on 21 attempts and no hitting errors. Max Martin had 21 kills (21-8-48) for a .271 hitting average. Martin and Jack Geary led MSOE with four blocks apiece.
Geary also added to the Raiders point total with 11 kills and two service aces. Alex Harbour had 14 kills and a .565 (14 -1-23) hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Matt Morrone led all players with 61 assists, his career match high. John Cote shored up the defense, collecting 13 digs in the five-set thriller.
“We have always struggled in that gym, so winning a five-set match there was a bonus,” said head coach Brian Gibboney. “I feel like we are playing very consistently as a team right now, with everyone contributing to the success of our team. Coming off a big weekend beating a ranked team (#12 Elmira) while playing six matches in three days, let down was expected, but I feel that we held our composure throughout the match.”
The Raiders play NAIA Robert Morris (Ill.) on Saturday, March 24 in the MSOE Kern Center. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
