MSOE women's basketball takes down Carroll 65-54

Senior center Carol Cayo scored 27 points and pulled down ten rebounds as the Raiders beat Carroll 65-54 Monday night at the Kern Center in Milwaukee. Senior guard Marguerite Wellstein almost had a double-double as well with 14 points and nine assists. The win was the first for MSOE against the Pioneers in school history.
The other Raider in double figures was sophomore forward Shannon Larson with 15 points. She also had six rebounds on the night. MSOE trailed 20-9 with 10:39 left in the first half. The Raiders then went on a 14-1 run including a three-point play by Wellstein to put MSOE on top 23-21. They had a 31-27 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, the Raiders pulled away with a late 12-2 run that included another three-point play from Wellstein. This time, Wellstein split the defense in the lane and knocked down a shot off the glass while drawing the foul to extend MSOE's lead to 59-51 at the time.
The Raiders shot 56% from the field in the first half and 49% for the game. Last season, MSOE only shot over 50% during one contest. The Raiders held Carroll to 23% shooting in the second half. The Pioneers were 2-11 from three-point range for the game.
MSOE (2-1) hosts Dominican Saturday at 2 p.m. for their first Northern Athletics Conference game of the season.
