Cayo and Grant reach semis at NAC women's tennis Individual Championship

The Raiders competed in the NAC Individual Championship this past weekend at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. Junior Carol Cayo knocked off Aurora's Natalie Jansen 8-5 in the second round after a first round bye in flight B singles action. Cayo lost to Abigail Kohal of Alverno 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Courtney Grant and Cayo beat Grace Rechel and Jenny Ferrera from Concordia-Wisconsin 8-1 in the round of 16 after getting a bye in the opening round in flight B doubles. Grant and Cayo knocked off Dominican's Viatra Baker and Monica Budzak 8-3 in the quarterfinals then lost to Phoebe Milner and Julie Spransy of Concordia-Wisconsin 9-7 in the semifinals.
Junior Marguerite Wellstein beat Keyonnia Shaw of Aurora in the opening round of flight C singles action. Wellstein fell to Sherquila Riley of Alverno 8-5. Juniors Julie Burg and Samantha Pekarscik beat Marian's Bryanna Pradiso and Sarah Brooker 9-7 and fell to Nadia Pencheva and Christina Belmont from Dominican in the round of 16 in flight B doubles action. Pekarscik defeated Ali Diamond-Tumbush from Edgewood in the round of 16 in flight B singles action 9-8 (7-2) then fell to Elizabeth Nelson of Dominican in the quarterfinals.
Senior April Miller and freshman Ashley Albrecht shut out Chi Zheng and Jessica Hammer from Rockford 8-0 in the first round of flight B doubles. They lost to Baker and Budzak in the round of 16. The team champion of the NAC will be determined in the spring after a new format was released this past week.
