Bohl’s Goal leads Raiders over #15 Augustana

Rock Island, Ill. -- The MSOE women’s soccer team came away with the biggest win in the program’s history: a 2-1 upset of nationally ranked Augustana Vikings. The Vikings were ranked 15th in the most recent NSCAA/Continental Tire poll. This is also their first win over a nationally ranked team.

Coach Rolf Zersen was proud of the effort and play of the Raiders in this important non-conference match. “we had a good game plan and the girl’s stuck to the game plan,” said Zersen. “Especially in playing back to back games and  a four-hour road trip today, the girls left everything on the field. We definitely had to fight to get the win.”

The Raiders jumped to a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into a game, off a goal by freshman Natalie Gaynor (Whitefish, Mont./Whitefish). At the 35 minute mark, Augustana tied up the battle with a goal by Jessica Kras, off two touches from Taylor Moesle and Kelly Farell. At the end of first half with the score 1-1, Augustana outshot the Raiders by a decisive 12-2 margin.

The Vikings also held a distinct shot advantage in the second half (7-3), but the Raiders made the most of what opportunities they had. Paula Bohl (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) scored the eventual game winner, off a pass from Caitlin Liddiard (Waukesha, Wis./South) with 34 minutes remaining in the game.

“We put away the offensive chances we had,” said Zersen.

Behind a strong defense and an eight save outing by Emma Lumpe (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence), MSOE held on for the upset win.

“Hats off to Lumpe for making those saves,” said Zersen. “The defense was rock solid in the back for us today. We were going to make them take the long shot or beat us with a tip in, so we just packed in the defense tight.”

The Raiders (5-3-1, 2-2 Northern Athletics Conference) return to Time Warner Cable Stadium on Tuesday night for a key conference contest against Concordia-Wisconsin (8-2, 5-0 NAC). Kickoff is a slated 7:00p.m. start.
