John Cording (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis./BM) had 16 points and Victor Bande (Sr./Madrid, Spain/IE) had 15 as the MSOE men's basketball team won its third-straight game, beating Wisconsin Lutheran, 69-55, Saturday night at the Kern Center.
MSOE (4-2, 2-0 NAC) was down by four, 36-32, with as little as 12:40 remaining before hot outside shooting buoyed the Raiders to an insurmountable lead. Bob Slovensky (So./Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./IE) got things going with his second three-pointer of the night, matching his season total to date, to put the Raiders back on top, 38-36. After WLC's Brett Lubbe made one of two free throws, Cording answered back with another three to make it 42-37. Two minutes and 41 seconds of scoreless basketball would pass before Russell Strutz moved WLC back within three points with a jumper. But a Warrior timeout to plot defensive strategy after the basket backfired as the Raiders made it three in a row from beyond the arc with a Bande three, giving MSOE a 45-39 lead with 6:58 remaining. The lead would shrink no smaller than four the rest of the night, while a thunderous Stueck dunk with 2:28 remaining both cemented the win and brought the raucous Kern Center crowd of 487 to its feet.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-6, 0-2 NAC), despite now having lost four-straight, did come out intent on stopping its losing streak, scoring the first nine points of the game. However, a 13-2 MSOE run, capped by a Cording layup on the heels of a steal by Austin Stueck (Fr./South Milwaukee, Wis./AE-CM) would give the Raiders their first lead of the contest at 13-11 with 9:31 remaining in the first half. Neither team would lead by more than four before the end of the first half, though the Raiders took a three-point lead into halftime on the strength of a Bande three-pointer with 2:26 remaining in the period.
In addition to keeping the winning streak alive, the Raiders also remained unbeaten through two Northern Athletic Conference games, though that perfect record will get tested again Wednesday night as Marian comes to the Kern Center in the second game of a three-game homestand. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. with tickets available at the Kern Center Box Office
