Women’s Soccer Varsity holds off Alumni in annual contest

Despite playing a much improved veteran alumni team, The MSOE women’s soccer varsity squad remains undefeated in the annual preseason contest with a 4-0 victory. This was by far the most competitive game between the two teams as the Alumni team loaded up with many former All-Conference players and young alumni, while the varsity program saw only five starters return from last year’s 13-8-1 squad. Many of the new Raiders saw their first collegiate action on Saturday against the seasoned Alumni team which boasted over 20 Alumni.

The Alumni team threatened to score early with a shot hitting the inside post just ten minutes into the match. The Varsity team scored five minutes later, off a shot from Kate Hermann (Sycamore, Ill.), with Allison Zimont (Kalamazoo, Mich./ Plainwell) collecting an assist on the play. That was exactly what the varsity team needed as they added three more goals in the match. Anna O'Donnell (Plainfield, Ill. Plainfield North) scored the second Raiders goal, off a pass from Tori St. Martin (Dellwood, Minn./ Mahtomedi).

Caitlin Liddiard (Waukasha/ Waukasha South) scored the remaining two goals, the first with an assist from Paula Bohl (Muskego), the second unassisted.

The Raiders begin their 2012 season in style on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1 at the 2012 Comet Cup in Olivet, Mich. MSOE opens on Friday with host Olivet at 4pm, then takes on Trine on Saturday at 3pm. MSOE finished the 2011 campaign with a 13-8-1 overall record, 6-4 in conference play.
