Three MSOE wrestlers take conference titles as Raiders share NWA Championship

The MSOE wrestling squad finished with 89.5 points at the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament to claim a share of the conference championship Saturday in Sheboygan, Wis. Lakeland also had 89.5 points. Junior Caleb Staub and sophomores Marcus Rokosh and Dallas Schurg each won NWA titles.
Schurg won each of his three battles by decision to take the crown at 157 pounds. For Staub, he won his first two matches by pin (times of 1:53 and 1:24) then won by major decision over Luke Kreis 13-0 to take the top spot at 184 pounds. Rokosh won his first bout via pin in 1:49 and took the championship at 197 pounds with a 7-4 decision against Seth Kilkelly of Concordia-Wisconsin.
At 133 pounds, junior Austin Binish placed second while freshman Luke Gaeth took the third place spot by beating teammate freshman Nick Miceli by a 5-2 decision. Senior Jake Narveson lost to Roberto Frias in the final of the 149-pound weight class. Narveson picked up a victory by pin in the semis. Junior Josh Wengerter went 3-1 at 149 pounds to place third. Wengerter pinned Reynaldo Cardenas of Knox in 1:30 in the third place bout. As for 285 pounds, MSOE took the second and third spots as well with sophomore Austin Karls as the runner-up and junior Steve Nguyen placing third with a 3-1 overtime victory against Thomas Phalin of Lakeland. Freshman William Pedersen took the third spot at 174 pounds with a 12-3 victory over Jake Reuteler of Concordia-Wisconsin.
Next up for the Raiders is the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional next Saturday, Feb. 25.
