Men’s Soccer defeat Alumni to keep Doring Cup

In the seventh annual MSOE Doring cup, the MSOE varsity team defeated the Alumni squad 4-1 in tightly contested match. The crowd saw a great soccer match between a young varsity squad and a veteran Alumni group comprised of nearly 40 former student-athletes, conference stars and Raider standouts.

The first half was very competitive with both teams controlling the ball and playing great defense. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the game was scoreless. In the second stanza, the varsity team played with better precision and started to come together as a team.

Jordan Werner (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Montini Catholic HS) led the varsity team, scoring their first two goals of the game. The Raiders added two more scores for the game; one from senior midfielder Drew Porter (Milwaukee Wis./ Dominican HS), followed by a Nick Doebernig (West Allis Wis./ New Berlin Eisenhower) score.

The Raider’s Alumni got on the board with a shot by former MSOE standout Spencer Cook, off a pass from 2008 All-NAC forward John Varebrook.

The Doring cup is dedicated to the memory of Nathan Doring, USMC, who gave his life for his country in Anbar Province, Iraq on May 27, 2006. The varsity team has a 6-1 record in the history of the cup. Doring was a team captain of the Raiders in 1995.

The Raiders begin their 2012 campaign on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 at the Rose Hulman Tournament in Terre Haute, Ind. MSOE will face host Rose Hulman, Saturday at 12 noon, followed by a Sunday 2pm contest against Franklin (Ind.). The Raiders finished the 2011 season with a 12-8-1 overall record, 8-3-1 in conference play and lost in the NAC championship game to conference title holder Dominican University.
