The first preliminary heat consists entirely of boats from Ivy League schools, including Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Yale and Penn. With Harvard, six of the nine competing schools are from the Ivy League, while MSOE joins the Badger boat as one of two representing the State of Wisconsin.
As part of what has been the best season in the six-year history of MSOE Rowing, the Raiders last took to the water competitively at the Mid-America Collegiate Rowing Association Championships on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti, Mich., where they retained the Jim Bruckalew Cup for the second-straight year by winning the Lightweight 4+ Grand Final. Jon Allen (Jr./Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./CVE) manned the stroke seat, Liz Kelnhofer (Jr./Hales Corners, Wis./ME) was the coxswain and Ben Lang (Sr./Wittenberg, Wis./Bioengineering), Luke Engebretsen (Sr./Stevens Point, Wis./AE) and Mike Dorus (Jr./Des Plaines, Ill./SE) provided the push from the back as MSOE finished the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, 15 seconds, almost nine seconds faster than the second-place University of Michigan team.
For Sunday’s races, MSOE has chosen to withhold the names and seat positions of its competitors until after all teams have submitted their entries.
MSOE alumni, friends, parents and fans in northern California are urged to attend the event, wear MSOE spiritwear and cheer on the Raider team. Parking is available for spectators at Nimbus Flat Lake Natoma State Park for $10 per vehicle, with overflow parking and shuttle service to the spectator’s area available at the Gold Point Office Park for $5 per vehicle. The success of MSOE Rowing in 2013 has not gone without notice, particularly for the powerful Dorus, who was recently invited to attend the elite USRowing Mendota Developmental Camp. Dorus is the first-ever MSOE rower to receive such an invitation from USRowing, the organization which selects, trains and manages the teams that represent the nation in international compeition, inlcuding the Olympic Games. The camp will be held June 20-Aug. 1 in Madison, Wis.
