Men's Basketball holds back Beloit 56-52

Up by two with five seconds left, John Cording knocked a dribble away from Beloit College's Ahmad Shamsid-Deen and into the hands of Austin Stueck to secure what became a 56-52 win for the men's basketball team Thursday night at the Kern Center.

MSOE (6-4, 3-1 NAC) led by seven, 54-47, after Cording (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis./BM) hit a driving layup with 2:27 left, but saw the lead shrink to two with 53 seconds remaining after a three-pointer by Shamsid-Dean and a layup by James Lazarcik.  On the subsequent inbound pass, Cording was knocked down in the backcourt, but coach Brian Miller called for an MSOE timeout a split-second before the contact, negating any foul call.  The move backfired as Cording missed a jumper on the next play.

After Beloit (5-5, 4-1 Midwest) got the rebound and took a timeout with 10.6 seconds left, Shamsid-Deen looked to drive past Cording for the tying basket as Lazarcik tried to screen the Raider guard near the top of the key.  However, Cording avoided the screen just enough to be able to sneak behind Shamsid-Deen and tip the ball directly to Stueck (Fr./South Milwaukee, Wis./AE-CM), who was immediately fouled and converted two free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining to secure the victory.

MSOE's biggest lead was eight in the first half, but Beloit would fight back often in a game that had six ties and eight lead changes, one of which was the result of a technical foul called on Miller after he questioned a second-half traveling violation.  Stueck and Victor Bande (Sr./Madrid, Spain/IE) led the Raiders with 16 points and Jeremiah Erdmann (So./Oakfield, Wis./BM) had six rebounds.  Lazarcik had 20 points to lead all scorers while the MSOE bench accounted for much of the difference in the game, outscoring Beloit's, 14-2.

The Raiders will take eight days off for the holidays before traveling to Westerville, Ohio for the Otterbein Tournament, Dec. 28 and 29.  The games will be the first and second of five-straight away from home for the Raiders before returning on Tues., Jan. 15 for a Northern Athletics Conference tilt against Maranatha Baptist.  Tickets for the Jan. 15 game are available at the Kern Center Box Office.
