MSOE women's basketball claims spot in NAC Tournament

When the MSOE Raiders women’s basketball team held on to a 57-55 victory over Dominican Tuesday night, they clinched the first playoff berth in the Northern Athletics Conference women’s basketball tournament.  The Raiders have seven regular season games left on the schedule, which will determine final seeding.

For the game, MSOE had four players in double figures as they came back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat Dominican 57-55 in Northern Athletics Conference Action on the road in River Forest, Ill.

With a two-point lead, senior guard Kathleen Collingbourne knocked a three-pointer with 46 seconds left and the Raiders would hang on from there. Earlier in the second half, MSOE trailed 46-37 with 8:54 left. The Raiders would go on an 11-0 run to take the lead.

Seniors Carol Cayo and Marguerite Wellstein each scored 12 points. Cayo also grabbed 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double on the year which puts her among the top ten nationally in that category. Wellstein came down with six rebounds. Freshman forward Bre'Ana Strong put in ten points and had eight rebounds while junior forward Cate Scholfield logged ten points and five rebounds. Collingbourne dished out five assists and committed just one turnover.

This Saturday, MSOE (12-5, 9-2 NAC) will face Lakeland in Sheboygan, Wis. at 2 p.m. The hunt for the conference title and the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament begins Wednesday Feb. 22, with place and time to be determined.
