MSOE senior center Carol Cayo has been honored by D3Hoops.com, one of the most recognized basketball sources on the internet as a selection to the Central Region Second Team.
She has received many awards for her play during the 2011-2012 basketball season including being named the Northern Athletics Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Cayo is also a member of the First Team All-NAC for the third straight season. In addition, she was named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy. The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most outstanding men's and women's Division III basketball players of the year.
Cayo was recently picked as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for Division III women’s basketball. In NAC games, she was first in rebounding (10.3 PPG), second in points per game (17.3), second in blocks (40), second in field goals made (104), third in field goal percentage (52.8%) and third in free throws made (84). This marks the second straight year that an MSOE basketball player has earned this honor. Austin Meier was NAC Player of the Year on the men’s side during the 2010-11 season.
This season, the Raiders set a school record of winning 17 games and also won the most conference games in program history with 11. MSOE reached the NAC Semifinals where they fell to Dominican 76-71.
Cayo reached the 1,500-point plateau and moved to second in the MSOE women’s basketball all-time scoring list during the season. Also this year, she became the first player in NAC history to reach 1,000 rebounds in a career. She is the all-time leader in rebounds and blocks in NAC and MSOE history.
