Raiders on a Roll

Wauwatosa, Wis. –NCAA Division III goal scoring leader, Jordan Werner (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Montini Catholic H.S.), recently declared that the secret to his success was the great service he received from his teammates.  Well, Saturday afternoon in a 4-0 win over the North Central Cardinals, Werner returned the favor.

Just a few minutes into the match, it was quite apparent to MSOE backers that this game was going to different: the pace was higher, the tackles were harder and North Central was not going to sit back and let the Raiders string together passes.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it did not take long for MSOE to adapt.  After several chances for each team, MSOE struck first.  Pat Gathof (Beloit, Wis. / Beloit Memorial) received an outside of the foot Werner flick inside the Cardinal box.  Gathof held off the defender and volleyed in the first of the game, and his fifth goal in the last three contests.  Not long after, Drew Porter (Milwaukee, Wis. / Dominican) opened his goal scoring account for the 2012 season.  Werner set the platter for Porter with a lay-off inside the North Central penalty area.  With a clever first touch and feint, Porter made some space for himself and drove a shot past the North Central keeper.  It was 2-0 when the halftime whistle blew.

The third goal for the Raiders, in the 51st minute, by Logan Andryk (Hartland, Wis. / Marquette), was the kind of goal goalkeepers see in their nightmares.  From 30 yards, Andryk whistled a knuckling shot that bobbed and weaved past the bewildered Cardinal keeper.  Andryk was not done.  With about 15 minutes left in the contest, Werner completed a hat trick of assists.  With everyone convinced that the goal scoring maestro was going to let fly and try to add to his total, he twisted and played the ball to Andryk.  It was the final goal of the game and Andryk’s tenth of the season.

Coach Jimmy Banks was extremely pleased with the performance of the entire team.  “The guys stepped up today.  Garret Farin (Madison, Wis. / Madison East) had his best game of the season.  He made some big plays in goal when North Central was trying to get back into it.  Our entire team defended with energy.  We also scored some great goals, highlight material goals.”

The Raiders (10-3, 5-1) see action again this coming Wednesday, October 10th, when the play Madison Edgewood (7-4-1, 5-2) in Madison, WI at 7:00 pm.
