Tradition and rivalry runs deep at MSOE as the men’s hockey rivalry with Adrian College has been recognized by MADTOWNBadgers.com, a University of Wisconsin fan sports blog, as one of the top 100 college athletic events to watch. Writer Andrew Coppens ranks the match between the top two MCHA teams at number 99 on his bucket list.
Coppen finds the match appealing due to the intensity of play between the two opponents. “… these two teams always are competitive and it's usually a battle between 1st and 2nd place, something that always helps a rivalry develop for sure. The Raiders and Bulldogs just plain don't like each other much either, so that helps.”
The MSOE and Adrian hockey rivalry has only been in existence for five years, but it has been a heated contest since they first met in 2007. This season, MSOE held a 3-1-1 record against the Bulldogs, including a 4-3 defeat in overtime to win the MCHA Harris Cup and receive an automatic bid into the NCAA championship tournament.
Coppen comments on the college atmosphere each team brings to the rivalry and how it adds to the rivalries luster. “Add in the fact that they both play in great intimate hockey venues and you've got yourself one of the games you must see if you want to call yourself a true fan of college sports,” said Coppen.
