MILWAUKEE — MSOE took #3 Carthage beyond regulation in the third set, but couldn't force a fourth, losing 25-22, 25-14 and 26-24 in Continental Volleyball Conference action Wednesday night at the Kern Center.
David Johnson (Sr./Glenview, Ill./ME) had 10 kills and hit .389 in the losing effort for MSOE (3-11, 1-2 CVC).
After a disappointing second set in which MSOE had as many errors, six, as it had kills, the Raiders showed heart in the third, fighting back from down 17-9 to tie things at 22. The teams would trade points to make it 24-24 before a pair of Raider errors ended the match.
The Raiders wouldn't lead at any point in the match until the third set. MSOE kept the first set close, never trailing by more than four, but couldn't overcome Carthage (15-5, 5-0 CVC) and its .357 hitting in the opening frame.
Carthage remained perfect in CVC play and improved its current win streak to seven matches. Pat Barry and Jon Storm recorded an 11-kill, 11-dig double-double while Jon Storm hit .381 and also had 11 kills. The match was the fourth-straight for Carthage on the Kern Center court after the Red Men won all three of their matches in the 2013 CVC West Division Challenge at the Kern Center last weekend.
MSOE moves onto the Wisconsin Invitational with action beginning at 11 a.m. CDT Saturday as Thiel faces Rust. MSOE will play three matches Saturday, with the first coming against Medaille at 1 p.m., followed by matches against Thiel at 3 p.m. and Rust at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Kern Center Box Office.
