A Jeremiah Erdmann layup with 3.7 seconds remaining was the difference as MSOE captured a 64-62 win over Edgewood College in Northern Athletic Conference men's basketball play Saturday night at the Kern Center.
Erdmann (So./Oakfield, Wis./BM) broke free on a fast break after Austin Stueck (Fr./South Milwaukee, Wis./AE-CM) recovered a Cashton Craig three-point try for Edgewood that went well over the rim and ricocheted off the bottom of the backboard. Stueck hit Craig with the long outlet pass to produce the game-winning basket for MSOE (5-3, 3-1 NAC).
Edgewood (2-6, 1-3 NAC) had the ball after taking its final timeout of the game with 24.7 seconds left and appeared set to take as much time off the clock as possible with the possession. Craig had a driving dribble deflected by John Cording (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis./BM) with 15 seconds left and, while he recovered, he may have lost track of time in the process as his shot came with 11 seconds on the game clock and six seconds on the shot clock, but was a lunging, one-handed heave. Stueck took the rebound and dribbled toward mid-court before seeing Erdmann in the clear and finding him with the cross-court pass that led to the layup and win.
MSOE never trailed in the first half and led by as many as 10 before an 11-0 Edgewood run gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, 41-40, with 13:22 left. The Raiders answered back with a 7-0 run of their own to make it 47-41, but would be unable to pull away by any more than six the remainder of the night.
Down 59-53 with 4:53 remaining, Edgewood's Dylan Rusch tied the game with three-pointers on consecutive possessions. After a Stueck miss, Craig gave the Eagles a 62-59 lead at the 3:10 mark with Edgewood's third-straight three. Bob Slovensky (So./Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./IE) picked an opportune time to score his only points of the game, hitting a three with 2:45 left to level the score at 62, but both teams would then fail to score until the final basket of the game.
The game-winning pass was Stueck's only assist of the game, though he was the Raiders' top scorer with 15 points, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point territory and 6-of-8 overall. Victor Bande (Sr./Madrid, Spain/IE) added 10 points while Jaren Singh (Jr./Madison, Wis./BM) finished the night with nine points and six rebounds. Rusch led the Eagles in scoring with 18 while Joe Klocek scored 13.
The win will be the final one of the 2012 calendar year for the Raiders in NAC play as the team finishes December with four non-conference games. The first comes Wednesday as MSOE makes the short trip to Waukesha, Wis. to face Carroll University at 7 p.m., then the Raiders will then take eight days off before returning to the Kern Center to host Beloit College at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Dec. 20. Tickets are available for the Beloit game at the Kern Center Box Office.
