After going on a 13-0 run to begin the game, the MSOE men's basketball team held off numerous comeback charges by the Maranatha Baptist Crusaders to get its sixth win in its last seven tries, 49-47, Tuesday night in Northern Athletic Conference action at the Kern Center.
MSOE (11-5, 5-2 NAC) played nearly perfect basketball for the first four minutes of the game as guardAustin Stueck (Fr./South Milwaukee, Wis./AE-CM) connected on a pair of three-pointers to kickoff the initial surge. A Raider defense that entered the night allowing the fewest points per game in the NAC this season played a huge part, as MSOE held the Crusaders scoreless during that timeframe and forced 0-of-10 shooting from three-point territory in the first half. Maranatha Baptist refused to surrender, despite the slow start. After cutting the lead to five by halftime and getting as close as two numerous times in the second half, the Crusaders finally completed the comeback, tying the game at 47 on a Matthew McGivern jumper from left of the free-throw line with 1:58 left. Following an MSOE timeout, Raider guard Jeremiah Erdmann (So./Oakfield, Wis./BM) drove the lane with the shot clock expiring and made a diving, left-handed layup to score the eventual game-winning points with 1:21 remaining.
The teams traded scoreless possessions before Maranatha got the ball back with one last chance to tie or win. McGivern missed a three-pointer and a second, flailing jumper off the rebound, but the second shot ricocheted directly to Crusader forward Brett Cashner, who was fouled by Erdmann while trying to put up what likely would have been the final shot of regulation. With just 1.7 seconds on the clock, Cashner missed the first of the two free-throws.
Maranatha coach Keith Schalscheider called timeout and instructed Cashner to purposely miss the second free-throw to give the Crusaders a chance for a game-tying put-back. While Cashner did miss, he fired the basketball off the backboard and failed to hit the rim, a violation that resulted in MSOE getting the ball out of bounds without any time leaving the clock. John Cording (Jr./Menomonee Falls, Wis./BM) took the subsequent inbound pass, dribbled twice and was fouled, but the whistle and final horn blew almost simultaneously and the officials ruled the game over.
Stueck's hot start helped him lead the Raiders with 13 points, highlighted by a crowd-pleasing, fast-break dunk in the second half. Erdmann and Victor Bande (Sr./Madrid, Spain/IE) each added eight.
The loss keeps Maranatha Baptist winless through eight games in the 2012-13 NAC season. The Crusaders have lost seven-straight and fell to 2-11 overall with the defeat. Joe Borchart scored 15 points, while McGivern had 12 but landed awkwardly after his final shot of the game and had to be helped off the floor. He did not attempt to return.

The Raiders continue a rigorous stretch of games Thursday night by traveling to Plymouth, Wis. to face NAC foe Lakeland College before returning home for another conference game against Benedictine as part of a Saturday doubleheader with the MSOE women's basketball team. The women's game will begin at 2 p.m. while the men's game will begin at approximately 4:15. Tickets will be good for admission to both games and are available at the Kern Center Box Office.
