Raiders Shut Out Ripon in 2-0 Win

Ripon, Wis. - The MSOE Raiders (4-2) returned to their winning ways Wednesday night with a convincing 2-0 win over the Ripon Red Hawks (2-3).  From the opening whistle the Raiders played the game in the Ripon half.  Drew Porter (Milwaukee, Wis. / Dominican H.S.) continually threatened with dangerous dribbling forays down the left flank.  Whether he finished with a shot or serve, the Ripon defense was tested.  Early chances by Noah Corbell-Wild (Minneapolis, Minn. / South High), Jordan Werner (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Montini Catholic) and Pat Gathof (Beloit, Wis. / Beloit Memorial) all narrowly missed.  Minutes later, Logan Andryk’s (Hartland, Wis. / Marquette) low drive was thwarted by an outstanding save from Red Hawk goalkeeper, Daniel Mikesell.   Coach Jimmy Banks, “We certainly got ourselves in better position and created more in the attack this afternoon.  We filled the box much better and put them on their heels early.”  Despite the early attack, the Raiders did not find the scoreboard until the 40th minute.  Nick Dobernig (West Allis, Wis. / New Berlin Eisenhower) ran on to an Andryk through ball and softly chipped the onrushing keeper, for his first goal of the season.  The half finished 1-0 with the Raiders holding a 9-2 advantage in shots.

In the second half the game opened up.  The frenetic pace suited MSOE perfectly.  Ripon threatened, but the Raider backline, anchored by Co-Captain Brad Meissner (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) and Mike Skow (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead), was up to every challenge.  In the 66th minute Andryk deposited his fourth goal of the season off a deft Porter feed.  It was Drew’s second assist in the young season.

Coach Banks is pleased with how his team bounced back from the weekend.  “We have been playing good soccer, but I was disappointed that we did not get results this past weekend.  I gave Noah and Daniel Frey (Appleton, Wis. / Fox Valley Lutheran) starts because they both performed well in training and I wanted to shake things up.  I also wanted to give guys minutes to test our depth.  A lot of questions were answered today and a lot of guys stepped up.  That was a win to build on.”

The Raiders will kick off at 12:00 pm this Sunday against Aurora (3-2) at Vago Field in Aurora, Ill.  Last season MSOE defeated Aurora 3-2 and tied Aurora for 3rd place in the conference.
