Hockey ties no. 2 UW Superior

Superior, Wis.- MSOE surprised Wisconsin Superior, tying the number two team in the nation 3-3 Saturday night. MSOE Head Coach Mark Ostapina had positive remarks about tying the team that was just one notch short of the nation's best.

"This is a big step for the program in regards showing that we can play with anyone," said Ostapina. "To get a tie in their barn (arena) shows that we had the opportunity to win. We played well enough to win."

"The whole team played well. Toomey played extremely well".  Ostapina referenced freshman goaltender Conner Toomey, who arguably played one of the best games of his short collegiate career, stopping Superior 39 shots in 65 minutes of play. Coming into tonight's contest, Toomey was ranked 14th in the nation in goals against averaged (1.95).

However, Toomey had help from his teammates, Ostapina contends. "It was a total team effort. We played hard with extreme confidence, which was good to see against one of the best teams in the nation."

The Raiders offense scored three goals off UW Superior's Chad Beiswenger, who was averaging 1.75 goals against average, ranking him 10th in the nation.

One thing was for sure, the game was close from start to finish. After two periods of play, the game was tied 1-1, despite UW Superior outshooting the Raiders 27-18. The third period saw a flurry of shots and goals from both teams. UW Superior took a 2-1 lead early in the third, before the Raiders retaliated two goals of their own. Todd Krupa scored on a power play goal, off a pass from Kyle Smith with eight minutes remaining in the game. One minute later Ben Kenyon scored to give the Raiders the lead 3-2. With just five minutes remaining in regulation, UW Superior's Kent Detlefsen scored his second goal of the game and the period, tying the game for good. Overtime saw both teams take two shots apiece, but neither team scoring in the extra stanza.

MSOE heads into conference play with a Tuesday night contest against Concordia-Wisconsin. The puck drops at 7pm.
