Raiders rally for victory
Milwaukee, Wis. – After using much of the first two periods to shake off the rust, the Milwaukee School of Engineering hockey team rallied for a 3-2 victory over Lake Forest Friday night at the Kern Center. The Raiders struggled with their offensive opportunities for the first 40 minutes of the contest but finally got on the board when freshman Michael Siergiej (Eagle River/Northland Pines) beat Lake Forest goaltender Scott Campbell on a power play 16 seconds into the final period. Senior Lee Swallow (Stanwood, Mich./Northville) followed with a goal at 3:48 and added the game-winner at 16:14 to open the MSOE season on a high note. The final two goals rang familiar for the Raiders. Swallow’s shots were set up by fellow senior Blair Hanberg (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway) and freshman Michael Soik (Stevens Point/SPASH), whose brother, Brian, was a lineate of both Hanberg and Swallow the last three seasons. Freshman goaltender Chris Keller (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) allowed early goals in both the first and second periods, but finished strong to register 29 saves – including 14 in the first period – and picked up the first victory of his collegiate career. The Raiders (1-0-0) return to action Saturday night with a rematch against the Foresters, this time in Lake Forest, Illinois.
