Lawrence slips past MSOE Hockey 6-5
Appleton, Wis.-With a 5-2 lead going into the third period, the MSOE Raiders could not hold on, giving up four unanswered goals to fall to conference foe Lawrence University Vikings 6-5, Friday night.
MSOE jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game, off goals from Blair Hanberg (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds Woodway) and Jason Yolo (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead). Raiders forward Stephen Smiddy (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) added a power play goal with three minutes left in the period. Lawrence answered by adding a goal of their own to close the period, MSOE 3, Lawrence 1.
In the second period, The Raiders continued to dominate the vikings. Power play goals by Ben Kenyon (Sparta, Wis./Sparta) and Yolo raised MSOE's lead to 5-1. Lawrence answered with their second goal of the game with 9:18 left in the second period.
Lawrence came alive in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals; including Nick Jennette's power play game winner with eight seconds remaining in the game. Lawrence out shot MSOE 17-6 in the third period. MSOE was handed six penalties for 20 minutes of penalty time, compared to two fouls for four minutes given to Lawrence in the third stanza.
The shocking loss gives MSOE a 2-1 overall record and 0-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, while Lawrence record reaches 1-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
The two teams match up again tonight, this time in the Kern Center Arena in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Game time is slated for 7:05p.m.
