MSOE Hockey Starts MCHA Playoffs with Victory over Lawrence
Milwaukee, Wis. - The MSOE Raiders hockey team defeated the Lawrence University Vikings 3-1 Saturday night at the Kern Center in the first game of the MCHA playoffs opening round.
Freshman Michael Soik (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) scored the first goal of the game at the 2:44 mark of the second period. The goal was assisted by senior Ken Walters (Portland, OR/Edmonds Woodway). Soik then scored again at the 6:23 mark of the third period to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Stephen Smiddy (Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) and senior Jared Moormeier (Edmonds, WA/Edmonds Woodway) had the assists on that goal.
After Lawrence scored to pull within one goal, Smiddy scored a shorthanded goal with 4:30 left in the game to put MSOE up 3-1.
Freshmen goaltender Chris Keller (Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) got the win for the Raiders by making 33 saves.
MSOE is now 14-12 and Lawrence falls to 10-13-3. The Raiders take on the Vikings Sunday, February 24 at the Kern Center at 4:00 p.m. in the second game of the MCHA playoffs opening round series. If MSOE wins or ties that game, they will advance to the MCHA Harris Cup Four which will take place at the Kern Center March 1-2. If Lawrence wins the second game of the opening round, then a 20-minute mini-game will be played right away to determine the winner of the series.
