Bohl Brace Lifts Raiders past Carthage

Milwaukee, Wis. - In the opening minutes of the non-conference contest between the Carthage Lady Red and MSOE Raiders, MSOE forward Paula Bohl (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego H.S.) received a nifty pass from Caitlin Liddiard (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South).  Paula neatly gathered the ball and struck, only to be stymied by the Carthage keeper, Abiggail Alm.  It was a hint of things to come.  Throughout the first half the Raiders exposed the Carthage defense only to find their shots in the hands of the capable Carthage keeper, Alm, or slightly off target.  Their best chance came in the 33rd minute when freshman speedster Natalie Gayner (Whitefish, Mont. / Whitefish) crafted a pass to fellow freshman, Anna O’Donnell (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield North), who found herself one versus one with Alm.  A foot save kept the score at goose-eggs.  Moments later Alison Zimont (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Plainwell) followed up a loose ball, but again Alm saved.  The score was 0-0 at the break and the raiders had to be wondering if they would ever find the net.

In the 51st minute of the second half, Bohl’s tenacity was rewarded.  DIlliard, reminiscent of the opening half, found Bohl, who calmly played the ball into the side netting.  The well deserved Raider goal was Bohl’s second of the season.  In the 63rd minute Paula earned the brace, when she volleyed in a Kate Hermann (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) corner kick from inside the six.

The Raider attackers, though, were not the only players to make plays.  MSOE goalkeeper, Emily Lumpe (Lawrence, Kan. / Lawrence), made three crucial stops between the sticks, while defender Shelby Struble (Steamboat Springs, Colo. / Steamboat Springs) cleared a sure Carthage goal.

With the win MSOE improves to 3-1-1 on the season.  Up next on the docket is conference opponent Aurora this Sunday at 2:30 pm in Aurora Ill. on Vago field.
