2010-2011 Season Review
2010-2011 Season Preview
MSOE kicks off the 2010-11 season with depth that it has not had in many years. But this team has more to talk about than just being a large squad, there is quality in the lineup. Virgil Pope has had 30 or more wins in the past two seasons and was an NCAA National tournament qualifier in 2009 and just missed qualifying last year when he finished 4th in the very tough NCAA Great Lakes Regional tournament. Pope has won two Northern Wrestling Association (NWA) conference championships.
Sammy Deligio returns to the lineup after missing last year while studying in Germany for his degree program. Deligio won 30 matches during the 2008-09 season and has also been an NWA conference champ. Sammy's brother Dominic also returns to the lineup and also has an NWA conference championship under his belt.
Three wrestlers that each won over 20 matches from last year's team also return. Fernando Morales, Jake Narveson and Josh Wengerter are expected to add power to the Raiders' lineup. Narveson holds the MSOE single season fall record after recording 18 falls last year and is only one fall shy of the MSOE career fall record after only two years of competition. Two runner-ups in last year's NWA conference tournament, Austin Binish and Matt Ostovich, also return to the lineup. Other returning wrestlers from last year's team who are expected to make significant contributions include Matt Brady, Adam Chaulklin, Steve Nguyen, Caleb Staub and Matt Weber.
Several freshmen with state tournament experience are expected to make immediate contributions to the lineup. They include Kyle Perea (4th place in the New Mexico state tournament), Austin Karls (Wisconsin state qualifier from Neenah High School) and Dallas Schurg (Indiana state qualifier).
The MSOE wrestling team works very hard both on the mat and in the classroom. This team plans to be recognized as one of the top academic wrestling teams in the NCAA Division III. MSOE boasts a perfect 100% graduation rate amongst seniors that have competed on the wrestling team.
