2010-11 Season Recap

Junior Jake Narveson took part in the NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championships in La Crosse, Wis. Narveson (38-12) dropped both matches at that event. He finished fourth at 141 pounds at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Wrestling Regional to earn an at-large bid to the national event. The last Raider wrestler to compete at nationals before Narveson was senior Virgil Pope in 2009.

Also at the regional, Senior Virgil Pope finished in sixth place in the 157-pound weight class. Sophomore Joshua Wengerter was 2-2 at 149 pounds and senior Samuel Bramstedt was also 2-2 at the 165-pound weight class including a victory by pin. MSOE placed tenth at the event as a team with a total of 28.5 points.

Pope, Bramstedt and Narveson were named National Wrestling Collegiate Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans. Also, the MSOE wrestling team earned a nod as a NWCA Scholar Team. The Raiders' team GPA is 3.237. The team GPA is calculated as an average of the top ten students on each team. At least six of the ten athletes chosen must have competed in the NCAA qualifying tournament and the other athletes must have competed in at least 50% of the team's scheduled contests.

Pope is a construction management major who wrestled at 157 pounds this past season. He ended the season with a record of 32-13. Pope competed in the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships and placed second at this year's Northern Wrestling Association conference tournament.

Bramstedt is a mechanical engineering major who competed at the 165-pound weight class and garnered a record of 22-11 during the 2010-11 season. He placed third at the NWA conference tournament. Narveson majors in mechanical engineering.

The Raiders finished second at the NWA Conference Tournament with 94.5 points in Mequon, Wis. Narveson took title at 141 pounds with a 7-2 decision against Rob Frias of Lakeland in the championship match. In the 184-pound weight class, sophomore Caleb Staub won by major decision 16-3 against Shane Brandl of Concordia-Wisconsin to win that title. Sophomore Steven Nguyen came out with the title at 285 pounds by beating Thomas Phalin 8-2 in the final match.

Sophomore Josh Wengerter came in second in the 149-pound weight class. At 125 pounds, senior Sammy Deligio defeated Grant Franson of Lakeland in the third place match by the score of 9-5. Senior Dominick Deligio also placed third in the 133-pound weight class. Freshman Dallas Schurg was the third place finisher at 141 pounds.

Senior David Swanson pinned Jordan Semevolos at the 2:33 mark of the third place match in the 157-pound weight class. Freshman Marcus Rokosh finished fourth in the 174-weight class while Kyle Perea was fourth at 197 pounds.

During the regular season, the Raiders were a school record 9-2 in duals including its first three victories over Wisconsin state schools.

MSOE wrestling coach Kevin Morin was named Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association (WWCA) District #8 (College Division) Coach of the Year. Last year, Morin and MSOE assistant coach Mario Trafficante were selected as District #8 Co-Coaches of the Year.

Morin was also picked as the Northern Wrestling Association's Coach of the Year for 2010-2011. He received the award five times when MSOE was a member of the Lake Michigan Conference.
