Spectacular year concludes with trip to nationals
Against NCAA Division I powers, MSOE rowing falls short in National Championship semifinals; rebounds to second place in Petite Final
In only their fifth year of the program the MSOE Raider rowing team made their first ever trip to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, but came up short in the first heat of the Lightweight fours event, finishing behind rowing powerhouses Navy, Harvard and MIT. Despite the Saturday early morning loss, the Raiders battled back to a second place finish in the Petite Finals, finishing behind Columbia University and ahead of third place Georgetown University. In the Grand Final, Navy placed first with a 6:18 finish, followed by Cornell College (6:20) and the University of Wisconsin (6:21) in third place.
The Raiders were represented in the lightweight fours competition by Jon Allen (stroke), Ben Lang (3 seat), Erik Winer (2 seat), Luke Engebretson (bow) and Rachel Connon (coxswain). MSOE rowing is coached by Chuck Stollenwerk in his third year at the helm. They will return three of four rowers next season.

2012 has been a banner year for the five year old MSOE rowing program. Along with the second place finish at the Dad Vail, the nation’s largest collegiate rowing event, the IRA National Championships is considered to be the most prestigious and elite collegiate varsity race in the country.
Rowing notes success at Dad Vail Regatta

In the semifinals of the men's Frosh/Novice Four with Cox at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, the Raiders placed fourth with a time of 7:24.22. The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta and in its 73rd year. MSOE was 18.89 seconds off the pace of the top team in that race which was Rollins. In the semis of the Men's Pair without Cox, the Raiders placed fourth with a mark of 7:48.92. MSOE was 18.09 seconds behind top finisher Drexel.
During the first day at Dad Vail, the Raiders finished second in heat 7 for Men's Frosh/Novice Four with Cox with a time of 7:16.41. MSOE was just over two seconds behind Rhode Island. The Raiders also finished second in the fif
Kilbourn and Juneau Cups won by MSOE Crew
In April, MSOE won both the Kilbourn and Juneau Cups in Milwaukee. The competition took place in the Milwaukee River. MSOE's Varsity Eight had a time of 4:54.73 to beat Marquette and win the Kilbourn Cup. Also, the Raiders' Varsity Four won their event to take home the Juneau Cup with a time of 5:29.66. Marquette and Lawrence took second and third. MSOE's Novice Eight took the top spot at 5:06.79 beating out Marquette and Northern Michigan. The Raiders were both first and second in the Novice Four.th heat for the Men's Pair without Cox with a mark of 7:49.22, about eight seconds off the pace of Lafayette. In the Men's Varsity Heavyweight Four with Cox eighth heat, MSOE placed third with a time of 7:12.79.

The MSOE Men’s Rowing Lightweight 4+ team qualified for the Grand Final and finished sixth at the 111th Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta. A boat from Harvard won the event, followed closely by one from the University of Wisconsin.
